Trauma-Informed Practice
What is trauma-informed practice?
Trauma-informed practice is a framework for understanding how trauma affects individuals, and for ensuring that an organisation's structures, policies, and interactions do not inadvertently cause harm or re-traumatisation. It is built around six core principles: safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, empowerment, and cultural consideration. It is not a single intervention but an organisation-wide approach that must be embedded across leadership, policy, training, and day-to-day practice.
Do you offer bespoke services or fixed packages?
Trauma is far more prevalent than many organisations assume. Any organisation that works with, employs, or serves people who may have experienced adversity needs to consider how its systems, processes, and communications may affect those individuals. This includes public inquiries, local authorities, charities, schools, and workplaces where staff are regularly exposed to difficult or distressing content. A trauma-informed approach protects both the people you serve and your own workforce.
What does implementing a trauma-informed approach involve?
Implementation typically involves a review of existing policies and procedures, the development of a bespoke trauma-informed strategy, staff training at all levels, the introduction of reflective practice and supervision structures, and ongoing consultation and review. We support organisations through all stages of this process, from initial scoping through to sustained implementation.
Can you support staff who are exposed to trauma in their work?
Yes. Supporting staff who work in emotionally demanding or trauma-exposed roles is an important part of what we do. This can include clinical supervision, reflective practice sessions, debriefing support, and consultation on staff support frameworks. Secondary traumatic stress and burnout are real risks in these environments, and addressing them is a core part of a genuinely trauma-informed organisation.
Public Inquiries and Independent Reviews
What experience does SaS Consultancy Group have with public inquiries?
Our partners have worked directly on some of the most significant public inquiries in recent UK history. This includes the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, the Manchester Arena Inquiry, the Infected Blood Inquiry, and others. Our work in these settings has covered the design and implementation of trauma-informed support models, safeguarding strategy, emotional support services for witnesses and core participants, and training for inquiry staff.
What services do you offer to public inquiries and independent reviews?
We offer a comprehensive range of specialist services for public inquiries and independent reviews. These include developing trauma-informed support models for witnesses and core participants, providing emotional support services for participants and staff, advising on trauma-informed public engagement, developing safeguarding policies and procedures, delivering safeguarding training, providing ongoing safeguarding consultation, and offering expert witness reports and oral evidence where appropriate.
Why is trauma-informed practice particularly important in public inquiry settings?
Many individuals who engage with public inquiries have experienced serious harm. Without a carefully designed trauma-informed approach, the process of engaging with an inquiry can itself cause significant distress or re-traumatisation. A well-implemented trauma-informed framework ensures that inquiries can fulfil their terms of reference while minimising the risk of additional harm to participants.
