Safeguarding in Practice

Safeguarding knowledge is only part of the picture. The real test comes when theory meets practice, and a real concern is sitting in front of you. This scenario-based workshop is designed to build the decision-making confidence that practitioners need when it matters most, giving participants the opportunity to work through realistic situations, test their thinking, and develop the professional judgement to act with clarity and purpose.

Safeguarding in Practice: From Concern to Confident Decision-Making

Safeguarding training gives us the knowledge to recognise concerns and understand our responsibilities. But knowing what to do in theory can feel very different when you are faced with a real situation.

This practical, scenario-based workshop is designed to bridge that gap.

Throughout the day, participants will work through realistic safeguarding scenarios based on thetypes of situations that can arise within their services. Rather than traditional role play, scenarios will unfold throughout the session, requiring participants to consider the information available at each stage and make decisions about what they would actually do next.

Participants will explore questions such as:

  • What are you concerned about and why?
  • What would you do next?
  • What questions would you ask?
  • What information would you record?
  • Would you share information, and with whom?
  • Does this meet a safeguarding threshold?
  • What if another agency does not share your concerns?
  • When should you escalate or challenge?
  • What changes when new information becomes available?

The emphasis is on practising safeguarding decision-making, not simply knowing the correct answer.

The workshop provides a safe environment in which participants can test their thinking, make decisions, discuss different approaches and learn from one another. Scenarios will become progressively more complex throughout the day, helping participants develop confidence in recognising risk, applying professional curiosity, sharing information, making referrals and escalating concerns.
